Venus is a mango developed in the breeding program of Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida, originating as a seedling of Zill Indochinese (Zinc) under planting number 33-10. While its exact pollen parent is unknown, Kent or Beverly are often suggested based on growth and fruit characteristics.
The fruit are round, medium-sized, and ripen to a yellow base color with light red blush. The flesh is light yellow, firm, and completely fiberless, surrounding a monoembryonic seed. Flavor is where Venus truly excels—rich, intense, and beautifully balanced, combining deep sweetness with a pronounced but pleasant acidity. The result is a complex, dessert-quality mango that consistently ranks among the best-tasting cultivars for those who enjoy bold flavor. Some fruit may show uneven ripening, a trait also seen in its sibling Sweet Tart, but eating quality remains outstanding.
Trees grow upright with moderate vigor and an open canopy, and they show excellent resistance to anthracnose at both the flowering and fruiting stages. However, Venus has proven to be highly susceptible to mango bacterial black spot, which often leads to secondary rot issues. This disease sensitivity significantly limits its suitability for humid regions of South Florida despite its exceptional flavor.
Venus is primarily a mid-season mango, with most fruit ripening from July through August, though occasional early fruit can appear as early as May in some years.
