This mango is an Edward seedling selected by David Sturrock from his breeding work begun in the 1950s in West Palm Beach, Florida. It was originally designated Edward × Earle #15, a name it still carries in the USDA collection at TREC in Homestead. The cultivar was later named in honor of P.J. Wester, a former head of the USDA Plant Introduction facility in Miami. The pollen parent was Earle, a Philippine-Carabao–type mango. The original tree remains standing at the Sturrock farm.
The fruit are medium-sized and oblong, ripening to a dull yellow color. The flesh is soft, light yellow, and completely fiberless, containing a polyembryonic seed. Flavor falls within the Philippine / Indochinese group, offering a mild, pleasant profile with gentle floral notes and a subtle touch of acidity.
This variety shows excellent resistance to anthracnose and has not demonstrated issues with mango bacterial black spot. Trees exhibit medium vigor with a spreading growth habit and open canopy. Productivity is generally good.
In Florida, the fruit ripen mid-season, typically from late June through July.
