This mango originated from Gary Zill’s breeding program in Boynton Beach, Florida, and is identified as selection 3-12, a Keitt seedling with East Indian suspected as the pollen parent based on flavor characteristics.
The fruit carries a flavor profile strongly reminiscent of East Indian, but with a key improvement: significantly reduced fiber, making it suitable for slicing and fresh eating rather than being limited to juice use. This places it firmly in the Indian/West Indian flavor group, with rich spice and resin notes balanced by improved texture.
Fruit size tends to be on the smaller side, and preliminary observations suggest it may be prone to mango bacterial black spot, though additional evaluation is needed to confirm the extent of this susceptibility. Bearing has shown some inconsistency, with fruiting observed in some years but not others.
Zill 3-12 is classified as a late-season mango, extending the harvest window beyond many standard Florida varieties.
