Zill 3-18 is a selection from the breeding work of Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida. It originated as a seedling of ‘Julie’, with ‘Gary’ suspected to be the pollen parent. Early on, it was briefly referred to as ‘Honey’, though that name was never formally adopted or propagated.
The fruit has earned attention primarily for its exceptional eating quality. Flavor is strongly influenced by both parents, combining the spicy richness of Julie with the sweet, dessert-like character of Gary, highlighted by pronounced coconut notes. This places it firmly in the coconut-flavored category, a profile that tends to appeal strongly to fans of West Indian–style mangos.
Production has been limited so far, with relatively few fruits reaching full maturity, making the variety still somewhat under-evaluated in terms of yield and consistency. However, the flavor quality alone suggests strong potential if productivity improves with age or further selection.
