Developed in Gary Zill’s breeding program in Boynton Beach, Florida, 36-43 is a high-quality seedling of ‘Bombay’ that closely reflects its parent’s character while improving on a few physical traits.
Like Bombay, the tree is very vigorous and can be inconsistent in flowering, particularly in some seasons. When it does produce, however, the fruit quality is outstanding. The mangoes are larger than Bombay, notably without the pronounced beak, and contain yellow, completely fiberless flesh with a monoembryonic seed.
The flavor is firmly in the Indian/West Indian group—rich, sweet, and heavily spiced—with a profile that strongly recalls Bombay but in a slightly more refined and approachable form. For growers and collectors who appreciate classic Indian-style mangos with depth and aroma, 36-43 stands out as a serious contender.
In South Florida, 36-43 ripens mid-season, typically during July.
