Zill 40-26 is a Julie seedling originating from Gary Zill’s breeding program in Boynton Beach, Florida, with ‘Gary’ suspected to be part of its parentage based on flavor and growth traits.
The fruit are very small, oval to round, and mature to a greenish-yellow color, often softening while still on the tree. The flesh is yellow, extremely soft, and completely fiberless, surrounding a small monoembryonic seed.
Flavor is where Zill 40-26 truly shines. It delivers an exceptional dessert profile, combining coconut and citrus notes with pronounced sweetness. The taste is frequently compared to Gary, but with a more reliable fruiting habit and a stronger tendency toward female flower production, making it a more practical bearer.
Trees have shown good overall disease resistance, including notable resistance to mango bacterial black spot, which further adds to its appeal as a high-quality Florida selection.
Zill 40-26 represents one of the finer examples of the coconut-forward flavor group to emerge from the Zill program and remains under-recognized given its eating quality.
