Zill O-15 is a selection from the breeding program of Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida, and is a seedling of Jakarta. It reflects much of its parent’s character, particularly in flavor, while offering a slightly sweeter profile.

The fruit are medium-sized, ovate, and turn yellow at maturity. The flesh is yellow, firm, and fiberless, with an excellent eating quality. Flavor falls squarely in the Indian/West Indian group and can be highly resinous, strongly reminiscent of Jakarta, though often with added sweetness. When conditions are favorable, the fruit can be outstanding; however, quality has shown some variability, with certain crops tasting washed out.

The original tree is known to be productive, but the ripening window is very compressed, often lasting only a couple of weeks. Trees exhibit reliable fruiting once established, though some seasons have shown issues with fruit retention during early development.

Physiological challenges have been observed, particularly stem-end rot and the tendency to develop large anthracnose spots near the top of the fruit. These issues can impact marketability and consistency, though performance may improve as trees mature.

Zill O-15 remains an intriguing cultivar for those who appreciate bold, resin-forward flavors, especially fans of Jakarta, but it is best suited to growers willing to accept some variability.
