Zill Indochinese (Zinc) was selected by the Zill family in Boynton Beach, Florida, and is believed to be a chance seedling of Cambodiana, possibly with an additional Florida–Indian type in its background. Despite the longer name, it is most often referred to simply as “Zinc.” This cultivar has proven influential, serving as a parent to several mangoes released from the Zill breeding program in more recent years.
The fruit are small to medium in size, round, and mature to a light yellow color with a subtle blush near the stem end. The flesh is firm, yellow, and aromatic, carrying an Indochinese scent very reminiscent of Cambodiana. The seed is monoembryonic.
Flavor falls squarely in the Indochinese-hybrid category, marked by bright floral sweetness balanced with a noticeable but pleasant acidity. Some tasters describe a slightly chalky texture, and the fruit can occasionally show uneven ripening, especially if allowed to fully ripen on the tree.
Trees exhibit moderate vigor with a spreading, open canopy. Both flowers and fruit show good anthracnose resistance, along with strong resistance to bacterial black spot. Production is typically moderate but consistent.
Zill Indochinese is a mid-season mango, with fruit generally ripening from July through August, often over an extended harvest window.
